The Nature of the Quantocks Book

‘The Nature of the Quantocks ~ a landscape of heath, mire and wooded combes’ by Nigel Phillips

Friends of the Quantocks are thrilled to announce the publication of a brand new book – ‘The Nature of the Quantocks’ – written by local expert Nigel Phillips, who has pulled together a complete guide to the Quantock Hills.

What’s it about?

An intimate mixture of hilltop heathland, oak woodland set in deep combes, and many fast-flowing streams, combine to create the Quantock Hills National Landscape. This detailed and informative book covers the well-known flowering plants and ferns, birdlife and mammals of these magnificent hills. It also explores lesser-known wildlife, with chapters on mosses and liverworts, fungi and lichens, and invertebrates.

It is a beautiful full colour guide that will inspire you to explore and help you learn as you go!

Nigel Philips

The Author

Nigel Phillips worked for the Wildlife Trusts as a nature reserve manager and ecologist for more than thirty years. In 2013 he became the Somerset Wildlife Trusts Coast Ambassador and set up and chaired the Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Marine Awareness Campaign, which has run a programme of coastal and marine events along the coast over several years.

Nigel has written three books on the wildlife of Somerset’s coast, ‘Somerset’s Coast a Living Landscape’, ‘A Guide To Finding Seashore & Rockpool Life in Somerset’ and ‘The Nature of Somerset’s Coast’.

In 2016 he received the ‘Marsh Award for Marine Conservation’ in recognition of his outstanding contribution to marine conservation work being carried out by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts.

Living in Nether Stowey, on the lower slopes of Quantock, has given Nigel the opportunity to explore the hills on an almost daily basis. ‘The Nature of the Quantocks’ is the product of something like thirty years of in depth research and photography and was written to support the work of the charity the Friends of the Quantocks.
