An insight into the work of Watchet-based Geckoella: a specialist consultancy for Ecology, Geology and Heritage building stones analysis
When they aren’t out surveying and collecting ecological and geological data and specimens, Geckoella can usually be found in their workshop at East Quay, Watchet. Here, they actively collate data, cut and analyse rocks and minerals and prepare fossils, assess coastal erosion features, scrutinise wildlife videos and bat sound files to gather ecological and site use information, write reports and compile educational, training and interpretation materials. Geckoella also offers professional CAA-licensed drone survey and monitoring services, so much more than just an aerial photo!
Workshops and talks
Geckoella has an exciting timetable of open workshop days, talks and walks so everyone can come and learn about the local environment and what rocks! For example, Director and Lead Ecologist Kate Jeffreys recently supported local Landscape change expert Paul Rutter at a presentation organised by Watchet Coastal Communities Team discussing the importance of landscape change maps. Read more details about this project at www.geckoella.co.uk/news.
Dr Andy King, Geckoella’s Director and Principal Geologist, also gave one of his popular talks this month at the Holford Gardeners Group about the Fossils and Geology of Somerset’s Coast and its national and international importance. We are very much looking forward to his next Geology and Wine evening at East Quay as last year’s event was so well received.
Partnerships
As a home-grown team of leading experts in Geology and Ecology, Geckoella provides local jobs and opportunities for STEM graduates ambitious for sustainable development, environmental matters and the utilities sector. One of our projects on the Quantocks involved working with the Quantocks Landscape Partnership team to help gather better information on the special bats using the area, including Bechstein’s, Barbastelle and Lesser and Greater Horseshoe bats. This included a strong element of citizen science and building expertise within the teams involved.
Although the Geckoella workshop at East Quay is not generally open to the public, you can contact Geckoella by email [email protected] or call 0333 500 4777.
